I’ve been looking at a lot of poems lately, thinking about Katherine Bomer’s ideas on student writing in her new book, Hidden Gems, and was struck by this one, written by a student several years ago:

Snow

I can feel a
Cold hand touching
The top of my
shoulder.

My coat is gray
And the snow is
White is falling
Down from the
blue dark sky.

I ask myself
Who made snow

Sometimes they
Said God

Sometimes they
Said Santa Claus

Sometimes I believe
Sometimes I don’t

I have been in education for all of my life, in one way or another. After teaching 5th grade at an urban public charter school, I have decided to return to the public schools and to literacy coaching K-5. I also teach and mentor preservice teachers.

  1. This poem opens with such wonderful sensory details, then shifts to that William Blake-type question. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Thanks, Laura! It was a really rewarding study with 4th and 5th grade ELL students. We used resources from Georgia Heard and Nick Flynn, and the kids soared. I’m looking forward to writing more poetry with my students this year.
